How to Keep Your Tools Safe on the Job (From the People Who Know Utes)

Tool theft in Victoria is getting more expensive. While the number of incidents has actually fallen over the past decade, the value of what's being taken has gone the other way. According to our own analysis of Victoria Police crime data, the average tool theft now costs a tradie over $1,200 per report, up from $550 a decade ago. Thieves are getting pickier, and the gear they're targeting is worth more.

We're not police. We're not security experts. But we do know utes, and we know that a lot of tradies are losing gear that didn't need to go anywhere near a thief in the first place. Here's what we feel makes the biggest difference.

        Key findings from the analysis:

        • Tool theft is costing Victorian tradies $38.2 million a year, up 69% since 2021, and reaching a high of $42.1M in 2025.
        • The value of a single tool theft report is up 135% over the past decade, from $550 in 2017 to $1,293 in 2026 per report
        • Despite the rise in theft value, the total number of police reports has fallen by 48% statewide since 2017, but reports are rising in certain LGAs, indicating a rise in theft hotspots.
        • Wangaratta has recorded a 207% surge in tool theft reports over five years, the sharpest rise of any Victorian council, with 12 of the 15 fastest-growing hotspots located outside Melbourne.
        • Despite the regional surge, metro Melbourne dominates by value: Wyndham alone recorded $2.78 million in tool losses in the latest year, with Melbourne CBD close behind at $1.68 million.

Expert Tips: How Tradies Can Keep Their Tools Safe

        Lock it down, literally

An open ute tray is basically an invitation. If you're parking on a job site or leaving the vehicle unattended, anything sitting loose in the back is fair game. A quality lockable canopy is one of the most straightforward upgrades a working tradie can make. It keeps your gear out of sight and secured without slowing down your day. Our aluminium canopies are built for Australian work conditions, fit a wide range of utes, and are available with central locking so you're not fumbling with keys when you're loaded up.

        Get your drawers sorted

Loose tools in a tray or the back of a ute shift around, get damaged and are the first thing to walk when someone gets in. A proper drawer system means your gear has a home, stays organised and is a lot harder to grab in a hurry. Our 4WD drawer systems are built to fit specific vehicle models so you're not dealing with a universal solution that doesn't quite work.

The tailgate matters more than you think

A lot of tradies focus on what's in the tray and forget about the tailgate itself. A quality tailgate lock kit is a cheap and easy way to add another layer of deterrence. Combined with a canopy or a tonneau cover, it makes the whole setup a lot more work for anyone trying to get in quickly.

A tonneau cover for the days you don't need a canopy

Not every job needs a full canopy. If you're running lighter loads or prefer the open tray, a quality tonneau roller cover keeps tools out of sight and protected from the weather. Out of sight really does mean out of mind for a lot of opportunistic theft.

        Park smart

This one is free. Wherever possible, back your ute up against a wall or fence so the tailgate can't be accessed without moving the vehicle. On site, park in a well-lit area. If you're leaving tools in the vehicle overnight, don't. The data is pretty clear on where the risk is highest: Melbourne CBD, Wyndham, Brimbank and the growth corridors sit at the top of Victoria's tool theft rankings. If you're working in those areas, it's worth being more deliberate about where you park and what you leave behind.

        The bottom line

A lockable setup pays for itself quickly when you're looking at average losses of over $1,200 per theft. The best deterrent is making your ute the harder option. Most opportunistic theft is exactly that: opportunistic.

We build accessories for Australians who work hard and need gear that works just as hard. If you want help figuring out the right setup for your ute, head to our site or drop into one of our stores across VIC, NSW, QLD, WA and SA.
